Lincoln Bonsai Society was formed in 1977 by Mr Eric Brackenbury and a few friends and work colleagues. The club has been active ever since and has grown steadily over the years. The club members have all been amateur bonsai enthusiasts who have, through their continuous endeavours, steadily improved on the quality of trees owned by the members. The club meets once a month, currently the third Wednesday at 7:30 in the Grandstand community centre on Carholme Road Lincoln (A57 or Saxilby Road). (Second Wednesday in December)

The aims of the club are to engender a free and frank exchange of ideas, advice and knowledge amongst the club members. Members are encouraged to bring along a display tree where each tree is critiqued and its history and potential future discussed. Workshops are also run most night when members bring trees to work on and advice can be gained (and more often than not ignored) from other club members on styling, pruning, wirings etc. The club also has guest speakers from the professional bonsai community who provide lecture and provide hands on demonstrations. The club in recent years has exhibited at the Newark and Nottingham County show and the Lincolnshire Show. Over many years the club has won Silver Gilt, Gold and Large Gold medals as well as occasionally scooping the best in show awards (horticulture). The quality of the individual trees and the overall display on show has won many plaudits from both the judges and members of the public. In 2010 the club also returned to the Heckington show after some years of absence and on that occasion won a Silver Gilt medal.

Club members live in the local area and from the Newark and Retford areas. Many of the club members are associated with the East Midlands Bonsai Society and the North Nottinghamshire Bonsai Society. The links to other clubs in the area provide cross fertilisation of the latest techniques and ideas. The club also has more informal links with bonsai clubs in the Hull and Grimsby areas as well as good relationships with professional bonsai specialists in the East Midlands and South Yorkshire.

For 2011 the club is planning to display at the 3 shows mentioned above as well as having the usual club meetings. Complete novices are encouraged to attend as new members are the ongoing lifeblood of the club. The skill levels amongst members range from the complete novice to expert. However the beginners should not be put off coming as there is quite often lively banter and frank exchange of views (non of which is taken too seriously). Despite the forgoing it is an inexpensive means to meet new people and learn the art of bonsai from the wealth of experience and knowledge in the club.
